Lily returned home from work just as I was heading out of her apartment. I saw her before she saw me. She got out of the new car and paused to glide her fingers along the frame, a small, delighted smile curving her lips.

The smile lit a spark of delight in me too. She’d seemed almost downcast underneath her appreciation when we’d first shown her the car this morning, but she really did like it. While I wasn’t sure why she’d hesitated to embrace it at first, all that mattered was that she was happy now.

I loped over and grabbed her in a hug, pressing a kiss to the extra soft spot behind her ear at the same time. Lily let out a perfect breathy gasp of pleased surprise and then relaxed into my embrace. “Hello to you too. Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

“You’re irresistible,” I informed her, and eased back just enough to clasp her hand and tug her with me. “I’ve been put in charge of buying takeout for dinner. Come with me.”

She tipped her head toward the car. “We could drive.”

“Nah, there are lots of good places around, and I like getting my legs moving.” Ever since I’d dropped into this body, my nerves had twanged with a constant need for stimulation.

I would have popped in my earphones too and blared some of the pounding rock music I’d figured out how to download until it rattled my eardrums, but since Lily was with me, I wanted to be able to hear her. Even the tap of her shoes against the pavement—the glossy ones with the harder soles that she wore for work instead of her usual sneakers—invigorated me.

Because I was walking right here next to her. I could hear every sound she made with perfect clarity instead of the hazy blur of when I’d been without a body and so without proper ears. It really was a miracle.

I swung our hands together. Lily shook her head at me in exasperation, but she didn’t stop me, so I figured she didn’t mind my enthusiasm too much. She’d used to love my jokes and excited observations when she was younger… but she hadn’t been through quite so much back then. I guessed it made sense she’d gotten more serious, more tense.

But the longer she was with us, the more she’d see she didn’t need to be. Everything was going to be all right. She’d never have to worry again.

That cheerful thought was running through my head as we turned the corner toward a couple of my favorite restaurants on the main strip in town. Just as my mouth started watering while I debated between Thai and BBQ chicken, two burly men barreled across the street toward the alley we were passing and bumped into me.

Not just me. The one man’s shoulder knocked Lily to the side, and protectiveness flared inside me with a sharp jolt that wouldn’t have come at all if it’d only been me getting assaulted.
